Benefits of self-initiated learning
As we discussed in our earlier item (Cultivating self-initiated learning), there are real gains possible with self-initiated learning for employees through the use of technology.
There are also many benefits of this approach. Here are our top five:
1) Enhanced problem-solving skills
With self-directed learning there is less of a prescribed learning route and thus an opportunity to fully explore the problem and use critical thinking, accessing different resources.
2) More flexibility
We’ve talked a lot about the importance of providing flexible learning platforms and content. With a flexible learning approach, employees can work through content at their own pace and at a time that suits them.
3) Reduce training time and increase relevance
When employees can choose their own content (within a framework), they are more likely to choose something that interests them personally to learn, and/or is most relevant to their role.
This self-select approach helps to ensure relevancy for the individual and not a ‘one-size-fits-all’ training programme — which can also save time by not needing to cover quite so much content by having a more targeted option.
4) Gain a deeper understanding
Self-directed learning enables employees to gain a much deeper understanding of the given topic by exploring the theme in their own way. They can follow their individual through processes and learning steps.
5) Improve Autonomy
Putting learning content decisions in the hands of the employee gives far greater autonomy, which in turn promotes self confidence.
Our BentoBot learning technology platform can be set-up to put learners in charge, promoting a self-initiated learning approach.
